Activists up in arms against bid to pardon Dhungel

KATHMANDU: Prominent human rights activists in the country on Wednesday said that the government decision to recommend murder convict Maoist lawmaker Balkrishna Dhungel for presidential pardon is against the Comprehensive Peace accord and international conventions and condemned the move.

Organising a press conference in the Capital today, they also alleged that the government decision is a blatant violation of human rights and rule of law in the country.

Kapil Kafle, a member of Nepal Human Rights Council, urged the government to retract the Cabinet decision arguing that it is against the spirit of the international treaties and conventions.

Another activist Charan Prasain charged Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai of cheating the people and acting against his earlier commitment to work for ending impunity in the country.

Former chairman of Informal Sector Service Center Sushil Pyakurel warned of strong protest if the decision is not withdrawn.

Chairman of Advocacy Forum Nepal Mandira Sharma commented that the government move has posed a serious question whether the rule of law still exists or not in the country.

President of Nepal Medical Association Kedar Narsingh KC remarked that the decision has mocked the laws and human rights in the country.

Advocate Gobinda Bandi and journalist and activist Purusottam Dahal also criticised the government decision on lawmaker Dhungel.

The cabinet meeting held on Tuesday had decided to recommend that President Dr Ram Baran Yadav grant presidential pardon to lawmaker Dhungel.
