Murder convict Dhungel's supporters 'occupy' Baluwatar Over dozen Baluwatar protestors detained

KATHMANDU, MAR 17 - Supporters of former UCPN (Maoist) lawmaker Bal Krishna Dhungel, who was convicted of the 1998 murder of Ujjan Shrestha in Okhaldhunga, captured the area outside the Prime Minister's residence in Baluwater where the campaigners of 'occupy Baluwatar' had been staging demonstrations since the past few months.

Women rights activists and campaigners have been staging 'occupy Baluwatar' protests outside the PM's residence to protest against the recent spate of violence against women.

UCPN (Maoist) cadres reached Baluwatar before the occupy Baluwatar activists and tore and burnt the pamphlets that demanded action against former lawmaker Dhungel, who was given a life imprisonment by the Supreme Court.

The cadres shouted slogans against the occupy Baluwatar movements and warned to defy such movements. They also shouted Dhungel's name as 'a dear leader' and warned against reviving the conflict-era cases. Members of occupy Baluwatar campaign had pasted the pamphlets in the capital demanding action against murder convict minister.

The situation turned tense outside the PM's official residence when the activists of Occupy Baluwatar movements showed up. Police then detained over a dozen occupy Baluwatar activists saying security reasons. "They have been arrested solely for security reasons," said DSP Chandra Kuber Khapung.

Those rounded up have been detained at Nepal Police No 2 battalion in Maharajgunj. Occupy Baluwatar activists Bidushi Dhungel, Pranika Koyu, Sudha Maharjan, Sushila Maharjan, Jagannath Lamichhane, Pukar Bam Malla, Ishan Maharjan are among the arrestees.
